Teeth whitening in Miami, in the chair or at home
Teeth whitening in Miami at our Doral office lightens your natural teeth with a peroxide gel. You can do it in one Zoom session in the chair, or with custom trays you wear at home. It works best on yellowing from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco and age, and we check your teeth and gums before any gel goes on.

What teeth whitening does
Whitening gels contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, and carbamide peroxide turns into hydrogen peroxide once it is on the tooth. The peroxide moves through the enamel and breaks down the colored molecules in the enamel and in the dentin underneath. Your teeth end up a lighter version of their own color, with nothing painted on top.
Only natural teeth respond. Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings keep the color they have now. If you have any of them on your front teeth, we plan around them before you start, so you don't end up with one tooth that no longer matches. Whitening toothpaste is a different product: its mild abrasives polish off surface stains, but it does not change the color of the tooth itself.
How far a tooth lightens depends on the stain. Yellow teeth usually respond well, brown teeth less so, and gray teeth may barely change. We judge the shade against your face as well as a shade chart, because a white that suits one person can look flat on another.
- Whitening gel. Hydrogen or carbamide peroxide on the outside of the enamel, applied in our chair or worn at home in a custom tray.
- Enamel. The outer layer of the tooth. The peroxide passes through it rather than staying on the surface.
- Dentin. The yellower layer under the enamel. It shows through more as enamel thins with age, and whitening lightens it too.
- Stains inside the tooth. The peroxide breaks down the colored molecules, so the tooth looks lighter. Nothing is painted on.
- Pulp. The nerve of the tooth. Peroxide reaching the dentin can irritate it, which is where the short-lived sensitivity comes from.
Who whitening is for
Whitening works on the color of healthy natural teeth. These are the cases where it tends to do well.
- Coffee, tea and red wine stains. Stains from dark drinks and foods build up over years. They are the type that responds best to peroxide.
- Yellowing with age. Enamel thins over time and lets the yellower dentin show through. Whitening lightens both layers.
- Tobacco stains. Nicotine leaves a yellowish stain on the surface of the teeth. Whitening can lift much of it, and the color holds longer if you cut back on smoking.
- One dark tooth after a root canal or an injury. Gel on the outside rarely reaches this kind of stain. Internal whitening, placed inside the tooth, often can.
- Before veneers or bonding. If you are planning cosmetic work, whiten first. The new restorations are then matched to your lighter shade, since they will not lighten later.
When we suggest something else. If you have cavities or gum disease, we treat those first. Whitening is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for anyone 17 or younger. Deep gray stains, such as those from tetracycline taken in childhood, can take months of treatment and may not lift fully. For those, or when your front teeth already have crowns or veneers, veneers or bonding usually give a more even result.
How whitening works, step by step
Every option starts with the same exam. Then you pick the chair, the trays, or a session in the chair followed by trays to keep the result.
-
Exam and shade check
We look for cavities, gum problems, worn enamel and existing restorations, and we record your starting shade. If plaque or tartar is in the way, a cleaning comes first so the gel reaches the whole surface.
First visit
-
Zoom session in the office
We cover your gums and lips, apply the whitening gel and place the lamp. The gel is renewed in rounds of about 15 minutes, usually three, and we finish with a gel that helps with sensitivity.
About one hour
-
Custom trays for home
We take impressions and make trays that fit your teeth closely, which keeps the gel on the teeth and off the gums. You take home the gel and a schedule. Dentist-supervised tray plans range from a couple of hours a day to overnight wear, over one to several weeks.
At home, days to weeks
-
Shade review and touch-ups
We compare the new shade with the one we recorded. Keep your trays: a few nights of touch-up later on helps hold the result.

Sensitivity, aftercare and how long it lasts
- Sensitivity is common and short. Many people feel twinges in the first days, usually mild, and they fade soon after treatment ends. Tell us if it bothers you: a break or a milder gel helps.
- Gums can feel sore for a few days. This usually comes from gel touching the gums. Close-fitting custom trays and gum barriers in the office keep it to a minimum.
- Go easy on stains for 48 hours. Skip coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces and tobacco for the first two days. After that, rinse with water after dark drinks.
- Results last six months to three years. How long depends on the method, your diet and whether you smoke. Occasional tray touch-ups help keep the shade longer.
- More is not better. Using whitening gel too often or for too long can damage enamel and gums. Follow the schedule we give you.
- Skip the home remedies. Activated charcoal, vinegar and cooking oils have little evidence behind them and can wear teeth down. Never use hydrogen peroxide from the medicine cabinet on your teeth.
- Wait before new bonding or veneers. Fresh peroxide weakens how well dental adhesives stick to enamel, so we usually wait about two weeks before bonding anything to a whitened tooth.
What patients ask before deciding
How much does teeth whitening cost in Miami?
At Miami Perfect Smile, Zoom in-office whitening starts at $300. Custom take-home trays and internal whitening for a single tooth are priced at your consultation, because they depend on how much gel and how many visits you need. Dental insurance usually treats whitening as cosmetic and does not cover it.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Usually between six months and three years. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking bring stains back sooner. Brushing well, rinsing after dark drinks and doing a few nights of touch-up with your trays when the shade starts to slip keep it longer.
Is there a downside to teeth whitening?
The common ones are temporary tooth sensitivity and sore gums, which usually pass within days. Crowns, veneers, fillings and bonding do not lighten, so they can stand out next to whitened teeth. Overusing gels can harm enamel and gums. Starting with an exam avoids most of these problems.
Can yellow teeth go white again?
Yellow teeth usually lighten well, because yellow staining responds best to peroxide. They become a lighter version of their own shade rather than a bright, uniform white. Brown teeth respond less, and gray teeth may barely change. In those cases veneers or bonding may be the better option.
Why did my teeth go back to yellow after whitening?
Part of the brightness right after a session comes from the teeth drying out, and it settles over the next days. After that, coffee, red wine and smoke can restain teeth within weeks. Short touch-ups with custom trays keep the color far better than a single session alone.
Does whitening work on crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening only lightens natural teeth. Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings keep their color. If you want lighter teeth and new restorations, whiten first, then match the new work to the lighter shade. If old restorations no longer match after whitening, they can be replaced.
Is teeth whitening bad for enamel?
Used as directed and supervised by a dentist, whitening is considered safe. Problems come from overuse: too strong a gel, too often, or for too long, which lab studies link to changes in enamel. That is why we set the strength and the schedule for you rather than leaving it open.
