Teeth bonding in Miami, shaped on the tooth

Teeth bonding in Miami at our Doral office repairs chips, closes small gaps and evens out edges with tooth-colored composite resin. We sculpt it by hand on your tooth and harden it with a curing light. It usually takes one visit, and little or none of your enamel is removed.

What dental bonding is

Bonding, also called tooth bonding or composite bonding, uses the same tooth-colored resin as white fillings. The resin starts soft, like putty. We pick a shade that matches your teeth, shape the resin directly on the tooth, harden it with a curing light and polish it until it reflects light like enamel.

Because everything happens in the chair, there is no lab and no second appointment for most cases. Little or no enamel needs to be removed, so bonding can be undone or redone later. Porcelain veneers are different: they need a thin layer of enamel removed, which cannot be reversed.

Bonding does have limits. Resin resists stains less well than porcelain, it can chip over time, and it usually lasts three to ten years before it needs a touch-up or a redo. It suits small repairs. Large breaks or heavy wear need a crown or a veneer.

  1. Enamel. The outer layer. We roughen it slightly so the adhesive can grip, and little or none of it is removed.
  2. Dentin. The yellower layer under the enamel that gives the tooth much of its color. We choose the resin shade to blend with your tooth.
  3. Adhesive layer. A thin liquid brushed onto the prepared tooth so the resin sticks to it.
  4. Composite resin. Tooth-colored resin shaped by hand to rebuild the missing edge, then polished to the shine of the enamel.
  5. Curing light. A blue light that hardens each layer of resin before the next one goes on.

Who bonding is for

Bonding is for small, visible problems on otherwise healthy teeth.

When we suggest something else. A large fracture, a cracked tooth or a tooth weakened by decay needs a crown or a filling first. Wide gaps or crowding are usually better treated with orthodontics. If several front teeth are stained or worn, porcelain veneers hold their color and shape longer. If you grind your teeth, we talk about that before placing resin, since grinding chips it.

How bonding works, step by step

Most bonding is done in one appointment, in this order.

  1. Exam and shade match

We check the tooth, the bite and the gums, then hold a shade guide against your teeth to choose the resin color. If there is decay, we treat it first, and that is when we numb the tooth.

  2. Preparing the surface

We lightly roughen the enamel and apply a conditioning liquid and an adhesive. The tooth is kept dry, because moisture weakens the bond.

    A few minutes

  3. Shaping and curing the resin

We add the resin in layers and shape each one by hand. A blue curing light hardens each layer before the next one goes on.

    Most of the appointment

  4. Trim, bite check and polish

We trim the excess, check how your teeth meet when you bite, and polish the resin to the shine of the teeth around it. Expect 30 to 60 minutes per tooth in all.

What teeth bonding costs in Miami

At Miami Perfect Smile, bonding costs $100 to $400 per tooth. Where your tooth falls in that range depends on the size of the chip or gap, how much resin it takes and how many layers the shade needs. Bonding is one of the least expensive cosmetic treatments, but it does not last as long as porcelain. When bonding repairs a broken or decayed tooth, insurance may cover part of it as restorative care. Purely cosmetic bonding is generally not covered.

What patients ask before deciding

How much does dental bonding cost?

At Miami Perfect Smile, bonding costs $100 to $400 per tooth. A small chip sits at the lower end, while a tooth that needs more resin and several shade layers costs more. Your exact price per tooth is confirmed at your consultation, and financing is available.

How long does dental bonding last?

Usually three to ten years before it needs a touch-up or replacement. Grinding, biting hard objects, smoking and dark drinks shorten that. Because the resin can be repaired or redone in the chair, a worn bond rarely means starting over with a different treatment.

Is dental bonding covered by insurance?

It depends on why you need it. When bonding repairs a broken or decayed tooth, many plans cover part of it as restorative care. Bonding done only for looks is generally not covered. We accept insurance for covered procedures and can check your plan with you before your visit.

Does tooth bonding hurt?

Bonding is usually painless, and most cases need no numbing because little or no enamel is removed. We numb the tooth only if there is decay to clean out first. Some people notice mild sensitivity for a few days afterward.

Which is better, a crown or bonding?

They solve different problems. Bonding suits small chips, gaps and edges on a tooth that is otherwise strong, and it keeps more of your tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth and lasts longer, so it is the better choice for a large fracture, a cracked tooth or one weakened by decay.

Can bonded teeth be whitened?

The natural teeth around the bonding will lighten, but the resin will not. That is why we whiten first and bond afterward. If you already have bonding and want whiter teeth, we can whiten and then replace the old resin with a lighter shade.

How long does a bonding appointment take?

About 30 to 60 minutes per tooth, usually in a single visit. If you are bonding several teeth, we may split the work into more than one appointment so each tooth gets the time it needs.
