Teeth contouring in Miami, small changes to the edges

Teeth contouring removes a very small amount of enamel to change the outline of a tooth: a pointed canine, an edge that is slightly too long, a small chip. It is usually quick, rarely needs numbing, and there is no material to replace later.

What teeth contouring is

Teeth contouring, also called enameloplasty, odontoplasty or tooth reshaping, is a cosmetic procedure in which the dentist removes small amounts of enamel to change a tooth's shape or length. Nothing is added to the tooth. The dentist shapes the enamel you already have with fine polishing tools, then smooths and polishes it.

It works on the outer layer of the tooth, which has no nerves, so most people feel only vibration. The change is small by design: a pointed tip softened, a long tooth brought in line with its neighbor, a chipped corner rounded off.

The difference is often a fraction of a millimeter, yet it shows. A canine with a sharp tip can make a smile look harsher than it is, and one front tooth that sits a little lower than the other draws the eye every time you speak. Contouring evens out those details without covering the tooth with anything, so the color and texture stay your own.

Enamel does not grow back. That is the main thing to understand before you start. The result does not need replacing, but it cannot be undone either, so we plan the amount carefully and stop well before the tooth is weakened.

  1. Chipped edge. A small chip and an uneven biting edge, a typical reason to consider contouring.
  2. Smoothed edge. The same tooth after contouring: the edge rounded, polished and very slightly shorter.
  3. Enamel. Only the outer enamel is reshaped. It has no nerves, which is why numbing is rarely needed, and it does not grow back.
  4. Root. Untouched. Contouring works only on the visible edge of the tooth.

Who tooth reshaping is for

People with healthy teeth and small flaws in shape that bother them.

When we suggest something else. If you have cavities or gum disease, those are treated first, because reshaping an unhealthy tooth can damage it. If your enamel is already thin, if the problem is color, or if a tooth is too short or has a gap beside it, bonding or veneers add material instead of removing it. Crowding and bite problems need orthodontics.

How it works, step by step

Most cases are planned and treated in a short appointment.

  1. Exam and plan

We check that your teeth and gums are healthy and may take X-rays to look at the roots and the bone around them. Then we agree on exactly which edges change and by how much.

  2. Reshaping

The dentist removes small amounts of enamel with a fine rotating tool or sanding disc, and uses thin abrasive strips to smooth the sides between teeth.

    Treatment visit, about 30 minutes

  3. Bite check and polish

We check how your teeth meet when you bite, adjust any point that touches too early, and polish the reshaped surfaces until they are smooth.

What patients ask before deciding

What is teeth contouring?

It is a cosmetic procedure in which the dentist removes small amounts of enamel to change a tooth's shape or length. It is also called enameloplasty, odontoplasty or tooth reshaping, and it suits minor flaws such as pointed tips, small chips and uneven edges.

How much does teeth contouring cost?

At Miami Perfect Smile, contouring starts at $200 per tooth. The total depends on how many teeth are reshaped and whether other treatment is combined with it, and we confirm it at your consultation.

Does teeth contouring hurt?

It usually does not. Enamel has no nerves, so most people feel vibration rather than pain and do not need numbing. Some notice sensitivity to cold for a few days afterward.

Is teeth contouring safe?

Cleveland Clinic lists the risks as cracked teeth, cavities, infection and lasting sensitivity, mostly when too much enamel is removed. That is why we plan the change before starting and why you should never file your teeth at home.

Can teeth contouring be undone?

The reshaping cannot be undone, because enamel does not grow back. Normal wear and habits such as grinding still change your teeth over time, the same as untreated teeth.

How long does the procedure take?

About 30 minutes in most cases, and longer if several teeth are reshaped. You can go back to your normal routine right after.

Can teeth contouring fix crooked teeth?

Only in the sense of evening out an edge that sticks out a little. Contouring does not move teeth, so crowding, large overlaps and bite problems need braces or aligners. We tell you at the consultation if that is your case.

Can contouring be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Dentists often combine it with bonding, whitening or braces. We plan the order of each step at your consultation.
